Mitla Ceremonial Center of the Zapotecs

Mitla used to be a ceremonial center of the Zapotecs. It’s now a great place to visit because of its outstanding mosaics in its walls, a unique style of decorating in Mesoamerica.

In Nahuatl means “Place of the Dead,” and through all the area, you’ll find death allusions characteristic from Zapotec civilization.

This prominent site is formed by 5 constructions; South Group and “Adobe” Group; these two places are recognized as ceremonial centers, but it is thought to be constructed by Mixtec civilization.

The other three constructions are Stream Group, Column Group, and Church group. This last one is a real representation of past and present culture because Spanish Conquerors constructed the San Pablo church in one of its gardens.
