Monte Alban

The ancient capital of the Zapotecs

Monte Alban is an archaeological site 10 km from the city of Oaxaca. Called “Dani Baa” or White Mountain by its own inhabitants, this ancient Zapotec location was an important center for this civilization.

In this place, an incredible panoramic view can be appreciated. With pyramids, a court for the pre-Hispanic ball game, among many other mystical constructions, we will find here cultural traces from different civilizations, such as the Olmecs, Mixtecs, and Zapotecs.

Monte Alban is divided into different buildings; the most important ones:

Gran Plaza; the center of this sacred site; where ball game court and Edificio de Los Danzantes are placed. In this last building, there are human figures graved representing games and dances.

Other essential and exciting vestiges you need to know about are the Astronomical Observatory and South Platform, which shows trails with characters governors, warriors, and priests.
