Top places to visit from Cancun

Cancun top places to visit

Probably Cancun is one of those destinations that could take weeks to discover. Close to the city, there are infinite possibilities like; Cenotes, Adventure, Archeological sites, side destinations, party options, and more. If you plan to explore the area, here are some great recommendations that you shouldn’t miss.

Holbox

The Holbox Island is located on the Yucatan Peninsula north of the Quintana Roo.  Just two kilometers wide and 42 kilometers long, the small island has kilometers of coral and white sand beach.  It’s considered to be one of the world’s most important ecological areas due to it being home for a wide diversity of ecosystems, in addition to belonging to the Yum Balam Natural Reserve.

The location of Holbox island is at the exact point where the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico meet and is distinguished as being the region’s wealthiest waters.

It is easy for you to find sea turtles, eagle rays, octopus, lobsters, dolphins, manta rays, whale sharks, and many other different species.  The island is separated by the Yalahau Lagoon, and you can find over 150 kinds of fish, reptiles, and birds here.

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres first received international attention for its incredible aquatic conditions.  Jacques Cousteau was attracted by the caves, reefs, abundant marine life, and warm, clear water. There is an ample number of snorkeling sites, although those that the Cancun part boats frequently can get crowded during certain times.  The area next to the airstrip is a better choice.  It is just south of the city.  A majority of Isla’s residence make their living from fishing and diving.  They are a very hospital host for overnight guests as well as day-trippers.

Parque Marino El Garrafon is one of the more popular swimming sites and beaches.  Available activities there include a niche beach, showers, dining, scuba, “snuba,” kayaks, dolphin swim, aerial zip line, hiking trails, and snorkeling.  There are two related structures located on the southern tip of the island. There is a modern lighthouse overlooking a small Mayan temple (for the goddess of fertility Ixchel) that helped to guide Mayan settlements and sailors as distant as Cozumel.  There is also an intensely colored Caribbean-style village that has an outdoor sculpture garden, a cafe, and a town with shops.

Mahahual

Mahahual is often referred to as the “heart of the Mayan coast.”  It reminds many visitors of what Playa del Carmen was like a few decades ago.  This picturesque fisherman village has opened up its doors to tourists. It offers a perfect setting for relaxation as well as adventure.   It is practically inevitable to fall under Mahahual’s spell; the scent of the rainforest, the sea breeze, and Mexican Caribbean blue will provide you with an experience with nature that you will remember forever.
