Michoacan – Day of the Dead in Patzcuaro 3 days tour

Lake Pátzcuaro, Mexico

Day of the Dead is one of the most famous celebrations of Mexico. Families and friends come together to honor the Dead. During this exclusive program, which only takes place once a year, you will experience the magical traditions of the Day of the Dead. Enjoy the smells, the tastes, and the typical rituals while getting fascinating insights into one of Mexico’s most colorful traditions. Nighttime cemeteries, shrouded in marigolds and illuminated by thousands of candles make Lake Patzcuaro the perfect place to experience Day of the Dead. As you travel around the Lake, each village, town or city in Michoacan has its own celebration, with parades, markets, concerts, exhibitions, ceremonies and dances.

Day 1 – 31st October 2017

In the morning we will transfer to Morelia. Founded in 1541 by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza the beautiful city of Morelia, which is the capital of Michoacan, first received the name “Valladolid”. In 1828 its name was changed to Morelia, to honor Don Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, hero of the Mexican independence movement. Among the Mexican colonial cities Morelia is the aristocratic one. A guided tour through the Centro with a focus for all the ongoing Day of the Dead activities in hotels, government buildings and stores will give you a first insight in the rich traditions in Michoacan.

Day 2 – 1st November 2017

Today is all about the Day of the Dead. You will have the day to further explore Morelia. We recommend you to finish today with a visit to the Candy Museum, near the historical center of Morelia, and its special Day of the Dead displays.

Enjoy the tradition and beauty of Night of the Dead, November 1, when we start our evening tour to Lake Patzcuaro. Here you can experience the traditional way to celebrate this day as we visit the indigenous communities of Tzurumútaro, Ihuatzio and Cucuchuco. At their cemeteries you can admire outstanding decorations and altars. As the famous island Janitzio is extremely commercialized, we then will take a ferry to the Island Pacanda. Here, the traditions are still alive and even more astonishing. You will be able to emerge in the tradition with its religious idea that the dead have returned from the hereafter and share with their living a moment of encounter, a family moment, full of symbols and meanings, a shuddering experience of love. Thus, truly a memorable experience to end this day. Besides, we offer transfer to Hotel in Morelia in the early morning.

Day 3 – 2nd November 2017

We arrive in the early morning at the hotel (around 5am). So, try to get some sleep for a few hours and enjoy the breakfast in Hotel. Afterwards, we will make our way back to Mexico City (approx. 4 hrs).

  • "Just amazing"
We knew beforehand that Day of the Dead is a big celebration in Mexico. But we were not prepared for what we experienced on this tour. The celebration in all the villages and around this lake were amazing - families connecting with their loved-ones and all the beautifully decorated altars - it was just stunning!

  • "Would do it again!"
This 3 day tour was the perfect way to engage in Mexican culture. Starting in Morelia you could get a first glimpse about was what to happen the next days. Although we were up all night November 1st it really does not feel this way! We saw so many ceremonies and talked to local people, saw altars and felt was this night was all about - so time passed real quickly. Can really recommend this!
